This thesis investigates discourse strategies adopted in the translation of religious texts from Arabic into English. Such texts pose serious challenges for translators because of the orality found in Arabic religious texts and the difficulty of transmitting Arabic terminology and Arabic cultural and religious values into English. The question raised in this study is how does one translate a master signifier into another frame of reference where it neither identifies a community nor ties together other discursive universes.
