أَبْدَال: [جمعٌ مفرده بَدَلٌ] الأبدال: الزهاد. البَدَلُ من الشيء: الخَلَفُ والعِوضُ من الشيء، والشريف الكريم، وواحد الأبدال عند الصوفية. (مجمع اللغة العربية بالقاهرة، 2004)

الْأَبْدَال: هم الأولياء والعُبَّاد، سُموا بذلك لأنهم كلما مات واحد أُبدِل بآخر. (فالح، 1997) أيضا: قوم من الصالحين لا تخلو الدنيا منهم. (أبو الدهب، 2002)
